About us

A movie art director plays a huge role in making of a movie, primarily in pre-production as one of the head in a set’s main responsible unit – Art department. As a Movie Art Director, you lead the department in designing and creating the sets for the movie.

The role of Movie Art Director is hugely important, as every movie needs to create a mood. The good movie is a mix of Director’s vision, actors playing, good script and amazing sets. All those elements go into art direction and it is our job to ensure they cohere into believable vivid world.

It is not easy. The movie is a huge production that involves countless requirements from different departments that we should make work in harmony. We are the persons responsible for solidifying everyone’s vision and creating fluidity between the look of each scene. So, the ability to imagine and then execute on a finished product is very important.

The position is a mix of administrative and creative duties. First, you settle on a vision for the set design with Production Designer and the Director. Then you work closely with the Set Decorator, who animate the sets with furniture, equipment, accessories.

The Art Director`s work goes through four steps:

#1 Oversee all concept art

All movie art needs to go through the art director and production designer to ensure cohesion and creative excellence. This often falls to the artists at the team to visualize the ideas for characters, site locations or sets.

2# Supervise pre-visualizations

Once the overall design has been determined, artists across departments will start to visualize the Production Designer’s ideas under the Art Director coordination.

3# Supervise set design

After setting up the art department team of set designers, draftspersons and graphic designers, the Art Director supervise the actual design of the sets and their different elements coordinating the requirements of the other departments (props, SFx, VFx, Stunts…)

4# Building the sets

Last step is preparing the sets or the locations for shooting. You must estimate the time needed to build them and to schedule the process according to the shooting program. In the schedule also you must always have a back up sets ready, because it always happens something unexpected (weather changes, actor going ill…). During the actual construction a lot of problems appears to be solved. Often you must be flexible and quick in finding new solutions and to adjust the designs.
